Age Groups

Our children are grouped according to their age and development level:

40 days to confident walker
(Baby Bunnies)

The Babies section is a self-contained separate unit. We at Littlewoods ELC support all first time mums and we offer a breast feeding room. We use 'The Sure Start Birth to Three' system as a basis for planning activities for this unit. This is a 'Home from Home' setting, which offers a bright, friendly and stimulating atmosphere with ample play area. Each baby has an individual programme of care based around his/her home routine. To promote the baby's growth and development, simple play activities are planned to allow them to achieve their full potential such as 'Heuristic Play', 'sensory stimulation', 'Baby Massage', 'nursery rhyme time', 'stories and free exploration', as well as the very special one to one time.

These are spacious rooms with ample play surfaces. The emphasis is on learning through play in a language rich environment. The children participate in a variety of activities ranging from arts and crafts, music and rhymes. Feeding skills are encouraged, as is potty training, to enable a smooth transition into the next group.

Children are encouraged to interact with their peers through small group time. The playgroup children are involved in a wide variety of hands-on experiences. They learn by observing and doing, through play, listening to stories, singing songs, participating in creative movement and art activities. The playroom curriculum and structure is set to promote independence and create a smooth transition into their next level.

3 to 4 years
(Busy Bears)

Social skills are an important aspect in the development of this group of children. We focus on skills such as sharing, communication, interaction with others and following directions not only from the teacher but their peers as well.. We also prepare the child for the future introducing important early reading, writing and math skills. We also need to make sure all children are completely toilet trained. However our daily routine still allows plenty of time for learning through play and having fun.

4-5 years
(Rocking Robins)

Social skills and concentration skills are an important aspect in the development of this group of children. We focus on skills such as sharing, communication, interaction with others and following directions. We also prepare the child for the important transition into 'big school' by focusing on important early reading, writing and math skills. The day for this age group is more structured then 3-4 year olds, but still allows time for learning through play and having fun during allocated times. Children practice working and playing, individually, in pairs and in groups.
